I can finally claim to have at least one friend in high place(s). Mary Kay Henry, a human rocket already a couple of extra rungs up the ladder as an international executive vice president of SEIU, has just been named one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine. But MK hasn’t always swelled around in such rarified company: I remember a night in the San Francisco Tenderloin District many years ago when she had to depend on friends in low places to get our tucheses home safely. In a historic move for the Egyptian labor movement, the 270,000-member Real Estate Tax Authority (RETA) Union will become Egypt’s first independent union, reports the Center for Trade Union and Worker Services (CTUWS), a partner of the AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center.

Yesterday, more than 300 representatives of the RETA union’s General Assembly gathered at Egypt’s Ministry of Manpower in Cairo to submit their application to become the first independent union in Egypt. After a five-hour protest followed by intense negotiations, the Minister of the Labor Force agreed to accept the petition, a precedent-setting move that establishes RETA as Egypt’s first independent union. You may think it’s the players who are taking us for a ride on steroids, but the real cheaters are the owners who are taking our taxes and our ticket and beer and hot dog money and refusing to give fans even a peek at good baseball and basketball in return.  Biggest culprits?  The Lerner family, top investors in our 2-10 Washington Nationals, and Irene and Abe Pollin, long-time owners of the pathetic Washington Wizards.
