I’m probably leaning on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., far too often these skitzy days, but the man still brings us hope.  When he so confidently intoned, “The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice,” he surely must have had August/2010 in mind.

Sunday, August 1.  The Washington Post ignores the serial ethical transgressions of DC Mayor-for-Hype Adrian Fenty, endorses him for re-election, and assures us that City Council Chair Vince Gray will be elected in November to replace him.  Goodbye insouciant adolescence, hello mature moxie. Dear Mika: What a terrific show this morning — Morning Joe with no creamer, if you know what I mean!  Who else would have thought of putting Mike Barnacle on a panel to try and pick apart Eugene Robinson’s column on immigration “insecurity” in the Washington Post?  And who would have expected the two of them to agree on anything, especially that the surest way to stop illegal immigration would be to pass a law making it a felony for any employer to hire an illegal alien? Dear Mika: I had so little time this past week that I was only able to catch parts of the shows.  But I was able to watch all of the interview with Tim Geithner, and I was happy to see he’s gotten a haircut.  When he has all those curls bunched up on top of his head, he looks like one of those marathon dancers back in the 1930s, which of course he isn’t (but maybe again he is).  At any rate, I couldn’t have had more than half a “Cup of Joe” with you and the guys because I was deluged with comments about my first letter to you.  It’s what one gets, I suppose, from being totally transparent. Dear Mika: Yes it’s me, and I’m in love again.  Only this time, I’m in love with you, no, not in any sort of inwardly, downward, forever sort of thing, but in the same way I’ve fallen over the years for whomever rises to be the liberal female icon of the moment — you know, like in Joan Baez, Mary Travers (God rest her big old soul), Gloria Steinam, Jane Fonda (and didn’t she look great this past Sunday in the Times Magazine at what, 72?). A comedian, and magician and a tiger walk into a bar.  “Whassup?” the bartender says to the magician, who answers, “I cheated on my wife.”  The bartender says, “That’s OK, you owned up to it,” and pours the magician a shot.  “How about me,” says the comedian, “I also cheated on my wife, and I also confessed to it.”  The bartender pours him a shot.  The tiger is silent, so the bartender asks, “Why so glum?”  The tiger says, “Just like these guys, I cut around on my wife, and I apologized.”  The bartender pulls a pistol from beneath the counter and shoots the tiger between the eyes.  “Why’d you do that?” the magician and the comedian ask in unison.  “Didn’t you hear the guy?” the bartender says,  “he cheated on his wife.” (More)

I’m scheduled for cataract surgery in a couple of weeks, and I’m having second thoughts.  It’s not the consent form I had to sign — warnings about death, dismemberment and loss of eyesight are, as we know, just legitimate protections for the surgeon against greedy tort lawyers. What gives me pause is his prediction that after he scrapes away the cataract and implants a permanent lense, I may not need glasses for anything but reading.  That’s the really scary stuff for a guy who’s been hiding behind John Dean wire frames, Buddy Holly all-blacks, and Woody Allen horn rims since age two. I agree with Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen, who wrote this morning in “A Nobel for Us” that we as a people deserve the Peace Prize for having had the good sense and strength of character to elect Barack Obama President of the United States in the first place. If that’s true, then we as a people should have the right to decide what to do with the $1.4 million in cash (which is the same as money, as Yogi would say) that comes with the prize, with the caveat that awards be made to promote peace, comity and improve the human condition here and around the world.
